The Guilt of Leaving Home
2 min
In our journeys, some choices can take us farther from home, bringing both excitement and the weight of profound responsibility. In the journaling workshops I've facilitated this year, participants have shared the pull between pursuing dreams that may lead them away from family and the deep sense of duty that comes with that choice.
It's a common tension - the heart stretched across places, wondering if we're fulfilling our roles as family members and as individuals pursuing our own paths. Whether it's a spoken expectation from loved ones or one we place on ourselves, the guilt of leaving can shape our decisions and sometimes hold us back.
During a recent workshop, one participant shared a personal story that resonated deeply. As the only family member in the U.S., with everyone else an ocean away, they spoke of constantly thinking about home and the anguish of not being present for their loved ones, especially their grandmother. Hearing others talk about missing family brought their own feelings to the surface. Guided by the signature Kume prompts, the participant began to reframe their story, finding a way to honor both their connection to home and the life they're building here. In the end, they drew an image of a "gift box" with two ribbons - one leading back home, the other to New York. This captured the sense that when we step into new spaces, we carry pieces of home with us. Our lives, lived fully, can become a gift to both places, measured not just by physical presence, but by the joy, growth, and connections we sustain.
Inspired by this reframing, I invite you to our final Self-Talk Session of the year, Reflect, Resolve, Renew, on December 8th at 4 pm in Astoria. This immersive workshop is an opportunity to pause, explore your emotions, connect with your body, and find new inspiration in the past year’s experiences. You'll engage in guided activities that will help you reflect on meaningful moments, resolve limiting beliefs, and renew your sense of purpose. With a supportive facilitator and a community of like-minded individuals, you’ll gain insights from the past and set intentions for the year ahead—grounding your vision in authenticity, clarity, and connection.
If this resonates with you, I hope you will join us at the workshop and share it far and wide.
